This is the Rosetta
Stone for adoptees and the mothers who
gave them up. If you are either, Adoption
Healing is the book you read first for
understanding the dynamics of being
adopted and surrendering a child. Joe Soll
has given us a thought-provoking handbook
for discovering who we are. He leads us
through the emotions of that discovery
with compassion and gentle guidance. It's
hard work, but you're not doing it alone.
The book gives a greater understanding of
adoption and the great loss that surrounds
us. But there is also hope within these
pages. It's about finding yourself and
beginning the healing process that can
lead to a more joyful life. It helped me
so much in working through the emotions of
adoption that when I finished reading it,
I went back to page one and started all
over again. It's that good.
I am a 64 year old
adoptee who had the good fortune to read
about Joe Soll in the early 90's. It was
not until 1998 that I joined his Adoption
Crossroads support group in New York City,
to explore and explain my own adoption
issues. What an incredible eye-opening
first meeting! Joe Soll leads and guides
these weekly meetings for all involved in
the adoption circle with an incredible
understanding, intelligence, and
sensitivity. As a adoptee himself he
obviously knows of what he speaks.
In 2000 Joe shared his knowledge and
expertise about adoption and its
significant impacts in a book "Adoption
Healing... a path to recovery". It is a
amazing treatise on the psychological and
emotional ramifications of child
relinquishment and adoptions with guidance
on how to start a recovery healing
process.
Now 12 years later, Mr Soll has written an
even more insightful, more powerful
exploration of the plight of adoptees and
natural mothers who have lost children to
adoption. He calls this book "Adoption
Healing ...a path to recovery-Supplement"
but really it is a deeper probing of all
the core adoption issues. His training and
his years of counseling have given him a
unique insight which he shares very gladly
in this new book. He does suggest reading
his first book "Adoption Healing" first.
Understanding those concepts make this
Supplement all the more meaningful.
This adoption stuff is very serious and
Joe Soll writes very honestly and
succinctly about the realities of adoption
while clearly dispelling the myths.
Everyone involved in an adoption has many
losses both physical and emotional. Mr.
Soll explains these losses, and then
proceeds to offer exercises,
visualizations, affirmations, and inner
child techniques to help deal emotionally
with these painful loses.
He wants his readers to first understand
the problems and then to start the healing
process so that they can take charge of
their lives. He wants us to truly grieve
our losses, channel our anger over the
losses, and help our wounded inner child
who suffered these losses recover.
This book is an absolute must read for
anyone involved in adoption. It is
riveting, profound, and absolutely
essential for the mental well-being of
natural mothers who have lost children to
adoption and adoptees themselves. Bravo
Joe Soll
Joe Soll has given us an updated addition
to his previous Adoption Healing books.
Now there is an opportunity to go further
into the healing work of addressing the
pain and confusion caused from the
experiences of growing up as an adoptee or
from being separated from your child
through adoption. Most of the books about
life after adoption are personal, or
clinical. These books have been helpful,
but Joe Soll's works are unique, and focus
on doing actual therapeutic work. This
supplement comes from Joe's work as a
therapist and his own life experiences.
It is rare to find a person who has
devoted so much energy to helping others
heal. Joe has met people from all over
the world through his clinical practice,
workshops and healing weekends. The
common threads revealed from hundreds of
stories are woven into a guide for
practicing healing exercises, changing
the way you perceive yourself, and
recognizing the crazy making world of
the clueless general public.
As an adoptee and clinical social
worker, I have found Adoption
Healing...a path to recovery Supplement
timely and useful.Joe's work touches
everyone with validation. He goes beyond
sharing stories to guiding one through
and beyond the pain. I am grateful that
Joe Soll continues to share the depths
of his wisdom and to reach out to give
us all a voice.
